Fury of Firestorm #55-56 (January-February, 1987)
In Legends #1, the Apokolipsian entity Brimstone first erupted, and failing to contain it, former team member Firestorm enlisted the Justice League of America for a second, equally ineffective pass. Not only was much of downtown Pittsburgh left in flames, but a presidential order next banned super-heroes. Professor Martin Stein, one-half of the Firestorm Matrix, intended to respect the law and at least temporarily dissolve his partnership with former student Ronnie Raymond. However, fascistic followers of G. Gordon Godfrey launched a book burning on the campus of Vandermeer University, and against Stein's wishes, Raymond forced him into fusing to form the Nuclear Man. Ultimately, the right wing former Teen Titan Hawk took up the cause of costumed heroism on campus, while Stein finally forced the fission of Firestorm. In fact, Stein threatened to buy a gun and kill Raymond if he ever did that again, and in discussing the matter with his stepmother, Felicity Smoak equated Ronnie's act to "rape." During another escalation of violence, Ronnie visited his former teacher, who admitted to contemplating suicide with his new pistol, but eventually agreed to reform Firestorm on a case-by-case basis.

Justice League of America #38 (December, 2009)
As of this writing, the comic book with the most Vixen appearances is the 2006 volume of Justice League of America launched by Brad Meltzer and Ed Benes. After a lengthy tease, the intended final line-up included "Red Arrow" Roy Harper, Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Black Canary, Hawkgirl (Kendra Saunders,) Red Tornado, Black Lightning, Geo-Force, Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, and The Lady Fox. Dwayne McDuffie took over writing duties after the first year, and DC immediately started limiting access to the marque characters. African-American representation was upped by swapping in John Stewart and the Jason Rusch Firestorm, and the run ended with a team-up involving the Milestone characters. Vixen had been one of the central characters for three years, and her visibility had never been higher to that point. Then the writer of the much-maligned Justice League: Cry for Justice took over the title.
Echoing Aquaman's attendance complaints that lead to the reconfiguration dubbed "Justice League Detroit" in fan circles, Vixen calls a meeting at the old Secret Sanctuary, and only Plastic Man, Dr. Light, and Red Tornado showed up. After Arsenal was "disarmed" and Vixen had her leg broken in Cry for Justice, there was a real question of whether this Justice League was still solvent. Also recalling the Detroit years, Despero showed up to put this incarnation to this test. "Nice. I get to play with the JLA of today in this place of better days. Irony. It's one flavor of Earth I do enjoy the taste!" The lightly redesigned Kalanorian, whose fin now ran down his back, had stopped having fun with another errant Detroit alum, Gypsy.
Revenge? You flatter yourself. I've traded blows with J'Onn J'Onzz and Sodam Yat. I've battled champions. YOU'RE NOTHING!" Despero sometimes literally tears through the team, but is saved herself, at least briefly, by a revived Gypsy's chameleon powers. Then Zatanna shows up, fashionably late, but very welcome. Through means unknown, Despero vanished, and Zee explained that this pity party was ill-timed. At the Hall of Justice, the dead had risen from the grave and begun to kill and turn others into their army of darkness. With a spell, the haggard, hobbled lot were whisked away, where long thought resolved threats await... By James Robinson, Mark Bagley, and Rob Hunter.

Look for us on iTunes, ShoutEngine or directly download an art-tagged MP3 from the Internet Archive
Finally, the DC Bloodlines Podcast reveals its greater scope than just one 1993 event, but rather a mandate to cover the under-served DCU by looking at the earliest published (and especially the unpublished) comics of what was intended to be the first super-heroine series for a character of African decent, Mari McCabe: The Vixen! We start with the aborted 1978 first issue created by Gerry Conway & Bob Oksner from the second Xeroxed collection of "Cancelled Comic Cavalcade" and the rejected early '80s "The Power Squad" proposal before her accessible comics debut in 1981's Action Comics #521 and her second team-up with Superman in 1984's DC Comics Presents #68, plus supplemental material from Back Issue Magazine #40!

2015 The Vixen Amazing Houston Comic Con Jam Sketch Detail by Brad Garneau

Ive been drawing pretty much most of my waking moments since as early as I can remember. I began doing independent comic work around the Michigan area where I grew up. Then moved into the educational software industry which led me to the video games industry for the better part of the last 2 decades, where Ive most recently been working on games like the Incredible Hulk and most recently and The Hobbit game.I first encountered Brad Garneau when I was researching artists announced as attending the con, and specifically kept a lookout for him. I saw his work on Comic Art Fans, and was very impressed by both his tasty four color influences (definitely Angel Medina, probably Darick Robertson, maybe a bit of Tom Raney and Dale Keown?) as well as those outside our niche industry. Anyway, I couldn't find him for most of the weekend, but there was this one dude doing elaborate framed paintings that I was checking out, and saw a book of his line art off to the side... Damn it! I'd been passing the guy up the whole time because you don't normally see that crossover between mediums! In a bit of a rush, Garneau knocked out this sweet Halle Berry/mid-aughts model Mari McCabe, my favorite overall look for the character to date. I was very happy with Garneau's work, so I promptly forgot his name and sat on this piece for a year or so. Luckily, he turned up at Compicpalooza this year, so I could snap a cell phone pic of his signage (he'd run out of business cards) and get an even slicker full commission...

The Power Squad proposal art by Trevor Von Eeden

"The Time Has Come For New Power!!" Sometime between 1979 and 1982, noted DC heroine writer Jack C. Harris put together a proposal with artist Trevor Von Eeden to promote Supergirl and Batgirl as a genderbent "World's Finest" and create a recurring Defenders-style "non-team" alongside the Enchantress and the Vixen. You'll note that the Lady Fox is still in her original costume from Cancelled Comic Cavalcade #2, so this would have been her second aborted chance at getting published before finally appearing in a comic book story through Action Comics #521.

Aquaman #16 (March, 2013)
After the U.S.S. Mabus fired on Atlantis, Ocean Master declared war against the surface world. The Justice League fared poorly in their initial confrontation with him, as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman were sentenced to death in the Trench. Meanwhile, Cyborg underwent voluntary surgery to replace his lungs in order to carry the fight under the sea. Silas Stone initiated the procedure, though his associate T.O. Morrow argued "We wouldn't have to subject your son to this horrific operation if you'd just agreed to letting me activate the android... the Tornado could--" Thomas was cut off as Cyborg's idling mind went to work on the mystery of the missile strike. With the League overwhelmed, reserve heroes were called in by Cyborg to stymie the Atlantean offensive, including The Vixen, Firestorm, Black Lightning, Black Canary, Element Woman, Hawkman and a concealed Tiny Titan. The heroes were not used to one another though, which caused problems. Mari demanded "Watch where your (sic) flying Firestorm! We need to get better organized, Black Canary. Where's Batman? ...All I can smell is seawater." The reservists were then knocked out by an explosion. Cyborg received his upgrade and joined Aquaman and Mera in rescuing the DC Trinity. Victor Stone also had a lead on who was behind the Mabus attack... Aquaman's old advisor Vulko! "Throne of Atlantis, Chapter Four" was by Geoff Johns, Paul Pelletier, and Sean Parsons.

2012 Super-Team Family: The Lost Issues: Vixen & The Secret Sisterhood
Click For More!

Clockwise from upper right, we've got Xena: Warrior Princess, Princess Mononoke, Cheetara of the Thundercats, the Vixen, and Tigra. Not a bad little quasi-feral all girl super-group, though Xena seems to be the misfit of the theme. I have varying degrees of familiarity with these characters, but I think Mari would have fair odds against the lot of them. I'm not sure how fast Cheetara is, and Xena's darn tough, but I'm pretty sure the Lady Fox could handle herself nicely. Boy, that Jeff Johnson image sure has gotten a lot of play, huh?

2013 DCU Movie Fan Casting: Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Vixen
I was rolling out a cast for a hypothetical Justice League Detroit movie at a reasonable pace until I ran into a wall with the Vixen. Mari Jiwe McCabe is a damned tough part to cast, and all of the obvious choices (Angela Bassett, Gina Torres, Halle Berry, Thandie Newton) are too old for the part. Ideally, you want someone exotically beautiful and physically fit with sufficient poise and presence who is also willing to wear a skintight outfit and act like a jungle cat while performing gymnastics/martial arts moves. I spent countless hours going through demo reels to pick the perfect actress for the part, but never quite found her.
Zoe Saldana is an obvious option, but frankly too much so, with entirely too many geek franchise credits and too little true feel for the role. Rose Rollins is a safe, boring heroine possibility, and she's pushing the upper end of the appropriate age range. I waited until Battleship to see if Rihanna could act, but she can't. I really like Angell Conwell's look and attitude, but she's too broad and American. Tika Sumpter looks good, but every video I can find of her shows a very stiff actress, physically and functionally. Yaya DaCosta was a possibility, but she just hasn't done any action worth mentioning. Having ruled out all other options, I was left with Gugu Mbatha-Raw, a beautiful English actress who can do accents, has a background in genre fare, looks good in tight leather and has done some kung-fu in Undercovers. She'll do in a pinch, right?

Dragon*Con 2012 Vixen and Zatanna Cosplay Gallery by Shag Matthews

The next time The Irredeemable Shag takes over 600 cosplay pictures at probably the biggest con south of the Mason-Dixon, somebody please remind me what a total pain in the ass they are to sort through. Detroit was reasonably well represented by the usual suspects this year. All the Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, and Batman pictures can be found at their respective blogs. No Steel or Gypsy noted. I held out some hope for Vibe, as the guy got his own cartoon (under 5 minute division, admittedly) but no bueno. The Vixen cosplayer above stalked through dozens of group shots, but this was her only solo pic, although you can also see her tangle with a Red Lantern.

I think that this was the first African-American Zatanna I've seen, which was a nice change of pace. As usual with conventions, there were far too many Zatannas in Atlanta for me to spotlight all, or even most, of them. I have this kind of quirky/kind of rude thing I do when I'm going through a cosplay gallery. Whenever I come across a pack of Zatannas, I dub them "DeZees" (as in "disease," or "the zzz") Ladies, I'm sorry, but there are simply too many Mistresses of Magic running around in top hat and tails. Zee just lost a solo series where she wore a costume I haven't really seen in the wild. The New 52 look pretty much started during Flashpoint over a year ago, so I should be seeing that somewhere. A hipster on a budget could probably pull together Come Together fashion. The slightly more kinky classic look from the Seven Soldiers mini-series would be nice. The criminally underrepresented blue & white costume is certainly an option. Wear the baggy old Sindella suit if you're shy, or the silly Tom Artis "vampire" suit from that one issue of Secret Origins. Expand your horizons. Anyway, here's a trio of Zees that happened to be in one shot. I counted at least eight just in Shag's gallery.

"a redesign of Vixen w/ simple flats"This is a really fun New Wave Native American look that I could halfway see working in the original Detroit days (at least in the wake of Grace Jones.) I wouldn't rubber stamp it on a permanent basis, but it would be a pretty ginchy Elseworld.

"This is a character that I've only really been introduced to in recent years. I know she's been around awhile, (early 1980's) but I was first reading her in the Brad Meltzer run on the JLA books. Then I noticed her more and more as she appeared on the various DC animated cartoons. She was in Justice League Unlimited and again in Batman Brave and the Bold. It's interesting how that Batman cartoon was all but a full on Justice League cartoon by the end of it.JLA Jan
Vixen's power is to appropriate the attributes of whatever animal she can think of. It used to be limited to what animals were around her, but it has since expanded globally. Also she can combine these animals attributes. This is often shown in comics as a ghosted image of the animal she is channeling.
It kind of makes you wonder how powerful that can really be, and it's only limited to her imagination. Personally, I'd prefer to avoid a backhand slap from her with the power and strength of the tail fin of a Blue Whale....WhaPOW!"

2011 DCnU JLI art by TJ Frias

"Here's another sketch based on DC's relaunch, Justice League International featuring Batman, Booster Gold, Green Lantern Guy Gardner, August General in Iron, Fire, Ice, Vixen and Rocket Red. There's of course a mystery female member who's been pulled from DC's promo art. This is, of course, a tribute to Kevin Maguire, one of the dudes that truly gave life to the JLI.
Initial thoughts about the relaunch: JL and the subsequent JLI by Giffen, DeMatteis, and Maguire was my favorite Justice League run. It was eventually taken over by Dan Jurgens (I believe on art chores and maybe writing), and he is now penning this. It was a let-down then and I'm afraid it may be again. As far as costuming goes, I didn't think Booster needed a change. Vixen's could be better. I don't know what Fire's non-flaming look looks like. I'll refrain from commenting on the roster till I read some more."

Probably the first major line of super-hero action figures were produced by Mego in the 1970s and early '80s. Iconic DC heroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman were released in various forms by the company, and even shared space with Marvel Comics' top heroes and the stars of hit TV series/movies.

The Lady Fox and the Indestructible Man existed while the Mego Corporation was still making action figures, but they were much too obscure to rate toys of their own. The Detroit Era Justice League of America was just coming together when Mego was falling apart, and the busy late Bronze Age designs referenced here really stand apart from the more simple union suits of the "name" heroes Mego manufactured. Still, I get a kick out of this mingling of styles, and Hank turned out especially nice. More Mego Customs

They're fun, they're sassy and they all seem to have a mean right hook. For years, DC Comics has consistently created amazing female superheroes. I'd like to pay tribute to these amazing women of the DC Universe with one of my patented pin-up series -- Ladies of DC! Ninth in this series is the vivacious Vixen!
VIXEN
Real Name: Mari Jiwe McCabe
First Appearance: Action Comics #521
Abilities: Mimics the abilities of any animal
Vixen is one of those characters floating around the DCU who just happens to be immensely intriguing and entirely amazing. As a former fashion model, Mari is a beautiful African woman whose power allows her to copy the abilities of any animal. As if that's not enough to make me like her, she's got a sassy personality to match the cool powers! On top of that, she's also been a member of the Justice League and is always willing to help out Oracle and the Birds of Prey should they need her help. I loved Mari in the JLU cartoon and I love her in the comics. I really hope they push her more to the forefront as time goes on.

I rented "Thor" on Blu-Ray back in October of 2011 for my girlfriend (really,) and somehow the subject of the Odinson's theme song came up. Marvel put out a batch of extremely poorly animated shows in the 1960s, but most had catchy theme songs. Thor did not, which was why I needed to visit YouTube to refresh my memory of how it went. I know Captain America and Iron Man's by heart, but I figured I'd also check out the Sub-Mariner and Hulk's. This led me to DC's somewhat better animated but even shorter lived '60s cartoons by Filmation. It occurred to me that since I run a bunch of DC blogs and my friends do the same, the easiest crossover ever would be to just post embedded video of all the opening themes to shorts from "The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure."
Unfortunately, despite this being the least work intensive crossover ever, it hit some delays. Idle hands are the devil's playground, so I decided why not create a fake extremely limited animation Martian Manhunter opening from scratch? I'll tell you why-- because it's really difficult and time-consuming, while still looking like crap. However, I got it done, so it's online. Further, we invited more blogs to join in, even ones that never had cartoons, since there are plenty of fan-made numbers on YouTube. One guy couldn't find anything he liked that fit the bill though, since these would ideally run no more than half a minute and out. I decided to see if I could make a video for one of my left out blogs, and report back to the guy on how I did it.
There are multiple Vixen fan tribute videos on YouTube, but some run as long as fifteen minutes. I don't think casual fans can sustain that much enthusiasm for a member of Justice League Detroit. Instead of killing myself working from my DVDs, I simply used the free program YouTube Downloader to swipe other people's videos. I then trimmed clips out to fill a quick cut "opening theme" for a theoretical solo cartoon. The clips came from "Justice League Unlimited" and "Batman: The Brave and the Bold." I took the royalty-free music off of Creative Commons, and edited it using the shareware program Audacity. The individual clips were cut using Windows Movie Maker, a default program, although I did pull it all together on Nero. All told, I spent about five hours from start to finish, mostly because I'm picky about my music.
All characters and art are copyrighted by DC Comics & Warner Brothers, used for promotional and non-profit hobby purpose only. The music is "Somebody Else" by Dead Pawn Company from the album "G Funk Beatz 01." It is available through a Creative Commons limited license.
