The Caped Crusader Catalog

Bruce Wayne (1939-Present) had quit the Justice League of America in 1983 to form Batman and the Outsiders, then quit the Outsiders three years afterward when they got on his nerves. A month later, Batman got conned into becoming the leader of the Detroit League, but abandoned the team without a word midway through his second story arc with the group. His budding relationship with Vixen and two members of the Detroit League perished thereafter. The Dark Knight co-founded a new Justice League (soon to be International,) so perhaps he was only temporarily preoccupied by his partner Robin's injuries during the Legends mini-series. Regardless, the Batman's legacy as a member of the team was in helping defeat the enhanced new Despero and in more or less concealing the fact that he was ever a member of the Motor City Justice League.

2006 "Magical Lobotomy" color art by Craig Hamilton

Starring Doctor Light and featuring Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Zatanna, an unusually tall Ray Palmer Atom, Hawkman, and the sex parts of Black Canary, Green Arrow, and the Flash. Done with colored pencils by a fellow most famous for his work on the '80s Aquaman mini-series. Of it, Craig Hamilton said...

What a thrill it was to do this piece ~ this scene certainly is the highlight of Identity Crisis! A whopping 15 inches square, this one was a labor of Love! My great Pal and comrade in shenanigans, Michael Bair hooked me up with the IDCrisis series and got me hooked on the talent of Brad Meltzer. IDCrisis is JLA meets CSI with a healthy dose of (REALLY) Desperate Housewives!

Gypsy 's Runaway Index

Gypsy (1984-Present) has assumed many guises. Some say she is merely teenage runaway Cynthia "Cindy" Reynolds, playing dress up as a Roma. Others believe her to be the reincarnation of the spirit Nakia, while still others claim her as Drabardi, "truly not of this world." Whatever the case maybe be, Gypsy haunted a newly formed Justice League of America based out of Detroit, MI for a time, before joining them for a number of adventures. She retired to suburban life with her family, until they were murdered by the malevolent alien Despero. After a period of mourning, Gypsy joined the corporate super-hero team the Conglomerate, until its dissolution returned her to life on the streets. Gypsy was recruited to join the Justice League Task Force by her surrogate father figure J'Onn J'Onzz, and during this period became romantically attached to Ben Turner, the Bronze Tiger. Once the JLTF disbanded, Gypsy drifted from place to place, before taking a position among Oracle's Birds of Prey. Most recently, Gypsy has begun roaming again, popping up here and there, moving in mysterious ways...

"Justice League of Peanuts" by Dana P

Borrowed from both Crimson Lightning, where I was just reminded of it, and The Aquaman Website, where I first saw it well before I'd begun comic blogging, here's Dana P's take on the Justice League of America as portrayed by Charles Schulz's Peanuts gang. There's  Woodstock as the Atom, Pigpen as Hawkman, Schroeder as Aquaman, Snoopy as the Flash, Lucy van Pelt as Wonder Woman, Charlie Brown as Superman, Linus as Batman, Franklin as Green Lantern John Stewart, Spike as Green Arrow, and Sally Brown as Black Canary. The Martian Manhunter is also in there, and appropriate for my favorite under-appreciated Leaguer, he's cast as a Peanut too obscure for me to identify. Shermy? For more, try here.

It's a shame this line of thought wasn't extended far enough to reach the Detroit League. Why, the Elongated Man could have been-- um-- Roy? Zatanna played by Violet Gray? Steel as Maynard? Vibe and Vixen as the token Latino and black girl in the background of random strips? Er-- never mind.

The Vixen's Lady Fox Index

Mari Jiwe McCabe (1978-Present) would have been the first woman of color to star in a DC Comic, had her debut series not been canceled prior to publication during the infamous "DC Implosion," when the entire production line was slashed. Instead, the Vixen's first published appearance was in Action Comics #521 (July 1981,) where she began a series of guest starring dates in Superman titles. Following a costume redesign, Vixen became the first black person (and only the fifth woman) to join the Justice League of America, specifically their "new" Detroit incarnation of 1984. She remained on the team until its dissolution, then after a very brief hiatus, joined Amanda Waller's Task Force X. As one of the heroes tasked with wrangling super-villains employed as a Suicide Squad by the U.S. Government, Vixen served for most of their series' run. This marked his longest term relationship, both with a series and with a co-star, the Bronze Tiger. Throughout the 90s and 00s, Vixen made sporadic guest appearances, before finally rejoining the Justice League from 2006-2010. She is currently on medical leave following injuries sustained in the Cry For Justice mini-series.

Paco Ramone (1984-1987) was the first hero inducted into the Justice League of Latin American decent, co-founded the "new" Detroit-based incarnation of 1984, and has remained deceased longer than any other member. Vibe had vibratory powers, and was a former gang leader. He is survived as a super-hero legacy by his younger brother Armando, who served as a member of the Conglomerate under the titles Reverb and Hardline.
