2010 Workman DC Comics Super Heroes and Villains Fandex Zatanna card
DC Comics Super Heroes and Villains Fandex Deluxe
Celebrate 75 years of DC Comics with an obsessive Fandex Deluxe: a supersized deck of 75 iconic heroes and villains whose power over the popular imagination has never been stronger (think The Dark Knight, last summer's $1 billion blockbuster).
The gang’s all here: Batman, Robin, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Green Lantern, Captain Marvel, Justice League of America, the Flash. So are their nemeses—the Joker, Catwoman, Mr. Freeze, Lex Luthor, Cheetah, Brainiac, Poison Ivy, Deathstroke. Meticulously researched, with layers of information covering origins, biography, back-stories, affiliations, motivations, weaknesses, and fascinating trivia, the deck adds up to an insider’s history of the DC Universe. And what better way to present it than in the format with super powers—Fandex and its die-cut cards perfectly capture the characters in one dynamic pose after another, with the art taken straight from the pages of the original comics.
From the essential—learn about the Crisis on Infinite Earths—to the improbable—discover how Lex Luthor became President of the United States—to the offbeat—did you know that Clark Kent and Lois Lane lived in a building owned by Wayne (i.e., Batman) Enterprises: it’s a handheld feast for new¬comers and passionate comics fans alike.

2010 Trends International Justice League Detroit Stickers

Once again, courtesy of The Irredeemable Shag comes a set of swingin' stickers featuring the Motor City's finest metahuman organization!

First up, we have Zatanna. Like most of the characters on these stickers, she's drawn by Ed Benes. He drew the last run of Justice League of America with an iconic line-up, plus he has a modern style appealing to the layperson. If these are anything like the Sandylion Sticker Bits, they're geared for non-nerdy establishments like Hobby Lobby, and probably targeting consumers of both genders. Where Benes draws a lot of criticism for his sexually provocative depictions of women, this was comparatively mild. Still, I'm pretty sure a mom in the greeting card isle would think twice before letting her kid play with a busty broad in fishnets.

That said, I think it's really awesome that the manufacturers sought out a gender balance by including lesser known heroines. This is even more true for one of color like the Vixen, and I'd venture that she's the most dynamically posed of a static lot.

Finally, there's the Batman, breaking ranks through being drawn by a different artist. Benes handled the Dark Knight during his JLofA run, so the snub wasn't necessary. That said, the Batman figures move, and they've got that on-model quality of José Luis García-López that hits geeks of my generation in the sweet spot.
Later today, you can check out other Detroit members and friends at the following spotlight blogs...

1999 Hasbro DC Super Heroes Silver Age Collection Aquaman

Marvel Famous Covers dolls were doing good business in the late '90s, but they all had jacked-up "extreme" faces that killed my interest. They all seemed really, really upset about something, and when the corners of Gambit's mouth nearly touch his Adam's apple, you're doing something wrong. Still, the line was popular, so Hasbro came up with not one, but two copycat lines for DC characters, JLA and this one. All three had Mego in their DNA, of course. The Silver Collection was meant to show off some old school heroic looks, and they had much nicer boxes overall than JLA. Green Arrow, Green Lantern, a "New Look" Batman with removable mask, and an alternate two-pack with Robin were also part of the group. The figures were going for $15 or more each (I think I remember the Silvers having a pricing premium,) so I waited until just a couple of years ago to buy this Aquaman. As it happened, I caught him on sale at a local comic shop for $7.50.

Marvel Famous Covers easily had the best packaging of the three, but the superior of the two DC lines comes down to aesthetics. They both had plain backgrounds and a downright kinky number of visible straps holding the heroes in place. The design of the Silver Age Collection was showy, with silver foil embossing, spot varnish, and each character's trademark logo on their box. They also had more detailed information on the back of the box. On the other hand, JLA's more slender box had its virtues, and there were character drawings on the sides. The important thing to remember is that Aquaman looks fantastic in his box, and from experience, it is a huge mistake to take him out of the box.

The back of the box starts almost verbatim with the same boilerplate material as found in the JLA line...
The greatest heroes in the universe
join forces to combat the world's
most diabolical villains!
...followed by...
AQUAMAN
Real Name: Arthur Curry......Marital Status: Married
Height: 6 feet 1 inch.............Weight: 325 pounds
Eyes: Aqua-blue....................Hair: Blond
Aquaman was born to a troubled life. He was abandoned as an infant because his parents believed in the Atlantean superstition that said blond hair was a curse. The baby was rescued by a lighthouse keeper, Tom Curry, who named him Arthur. Discovering his incredible powers, young Arthur became Aquaman. As he explored the depths of the ocean, he found the underwater city of Poseidonis, and learned that his mother had been the city's queen, making him heir to the throne
Aquaman has the ability to communicate with most sea life, and to command it to do his bidding. He is extremely powerful, and can swim underwater at nearly 100 miles per hour.
As monarch of Poseidonis, Aquaman protected his people from threats from other underwater realms and from the surface world as well. He soon married Mera, a queen from a dimension of water, and with her had a son, Arthur Jr.
Jeebus! That was a Who's Who entry!

As announced on the box face, the doll is "FULLY POSEABLE WITH ARTICULATED FINGERS!" Unfortunately, what he really should have had to grasp was a trident, but no such thing was included. I guess he could hold a fancy plastic fork instead. This is the Silver Age Aquaman, so he has the modest black trunks, which is still leagues better than the Golden Mullet pirate look used for the JLA figure. Dig that belt!

From behind, you can see that the belt is securely fastened and easily removable. The suit is held shut by a proportionately ginormous wedge of Velcro, so avoid displaying from this angle. Note the open slits to allow breathing room for Aquaman's calf-fins, a nice touch that I'm glad the toymakers remembered. Also observe the peg openings at the bottom of the feet, secured by glue. Again, very thoughtful and pragmatic.

I decided to offer a larger view of the face for a better look, and because this is where my true bitching begins. As you can see, the head is nicely sculpted, I really appreciate the smile, and the piercing blue eyes are appropriate. However, Aquaman looks a bit "mature," doesn't he? I always picture the Sea King as a pretty boy, where he's kind of rugged looking here.

I'm sure the hair is meant to have a tussled "underwater" look, but what it really reminds me of is Katar Hol as drawn by Joe Kubert. In profile, it's hard to miss those disproportionate ears and a beak-like quality to Arthur's nose and mouth. Even the blond hair reminds me of the Golden Age Carter Hall. What I'm saying is that this is a good unmasked Hawkman head on Aquaman's body.

What appears to be beefcake above has a point. Aquaman has the same basic body as the other Hasbro nine inch figures, but his arms are permanently akimbo because the padding in his shirt is too thick. For the same reason, the arms move awkwardly, and posing the upper body is problematic. The "gloves" are especially tacky looking, better resembling water wings. They're glued on, so you cannot actually remove Aquaman's costume.

I partially removed the costume one time to display the tag and construction underneath. Unfortunately, the rubber gunk they used to make his top look shiny, combined with some nigh imperceptible embossing, meant the top was immediately ripped to shreds. The rubber frays and streams from even simple arm movement, so unless you're looking for battle damage, you cannot actually move any part of Aquaman's upper body. Man, I hate toys that were clearly not constructed for anyone to actually play with. Makes me miss the silly Mego painted on "chainmail."

Here's the stand that came with the figure. Hasbro was clever in that three of the characters selected for this line had green prominently in their costumes, so for all I know they all got the same base. The articulation on Aquaman's lower body is mostly unhindered, but the stockings over his feet mean you'll need this stand if you want to keep the Monarch of the Seven Seas from falling on his royal patootie.

Aquaman is a solid figure that looks great in the box and should never be removed from his box. If you want something to play with, I'd recommend the 1999 Hasbro JLA Justice League of America Martian Manhunter 9" Doll instead...

2010 Detective Comics #380 Twin Pocket Folder Style #3008DC

I wasn't a big fan of Wall*Mart just from a customer experience standpoint, and after seeing The High Cost of a Low Price, I feel really sleazy when I cave and shop there. Still, they're usually open 24 hours a day, and have a grocery store, so I try to stay alert for blog chum when I do find myself there. I scored a nice batch of DC folders on my last visit, and at just fifty cents a pop, I decided to pick up some that I passed on the first time for variety's sake.
Irv Novick's 1968 Batman and Robin cover is probably the best crop job I've seen on one of these folders yet. The enormous twelve cent cover price and Comics Code Authority seal are cut out of the top right corner and filled in with solid black (along with a small crease in the curtain.) You lose an inch or so of costume at the bottom and a trim at the top, but the changes are so minor I didn't even bother posting the cover here for comparison. In fact, the claustrophobic framing and vastly superior printing on the folder make me like this presentation of the art better. That said, this is the oldest cover I've encounter in this series by far, and part of the appeal is its randomness and dubious appeal to the younger demographic. Even the mystery girl is only, from what I gathered at GCD, Ginny Jenkins (better known as "WHO?")

I recycled this back cover scan from a previous post. The Innovative Designs logo is a dark purple on the actual folder, and the interior pockets are simply black. I'm really glad the company decided to jazz up the look with their 2011 offerings.

1989 Mayfair Games DC Heroes Elongated Man Character Card

This is a good looking card, no? I like when Ralph is shown to have solid muscle/anatomy that is only distorted when he elongates with a specific purpose (beyond perpetually looking goofy.) He's got an heroic face that recalls Jim Aparo, which is hardly ever a bad thing, and I much prefer the purple & white suit.
You know, I've long felt that stretching characters deserve more respect than they get. Elongation is a fantastic power that could be used for reach, strength, evasion, acrobatics... the list goes on. So what do the great minds of comics come up with? Rubber balls, parachutes, and twitching noses. Ugh.

Check that Dexterity of 12. That is massively effective in the role-playing game. The Stretchable Sleuth may not have a lot of muscle behind his blows, but he can connect with great facility. That rare appearance of Detroit favoritism rears it's sunny head again, because Elongated Man owns Plastic Man in this game. Ralph's bodily durability is better suited to street crime than League levels, but it's still nothing to sneeze at. I'd say Ralph's I.Q. is about right, especially given the separate Detective Skill of 6, but his so-called Emotional Intelligence is too much. You don't need an Influence of 6 when you're second string in the Motor City League. Maybe Gerry Conway favored his own creations, but when Vibe and Steel consistently show you up in pure personality? Double ugh.
Belated thanks to Tom Hartley, whose offering of a batch of about 30 character card scans was the taste I needed to seek more. He then sold his box set for a very reasonable price to a poor student to facilitate this crossover, because I just had to scan them all for myself.

1989 Mayfair Games DC Heroes Vixen Character Card

I don't know why the Mayfair illustrators were inspired to give the Detroit League the extra effort to look so nice, but I'm happy they delivered such a noble Vixen image (even with those booties.) It's a shame she was robbed on strength and Animal Mimicry, a power she schooled Animal Man in using, and he got a 13. Buddy became more powerful, but this was still '89, y'know? The 8 in Dexterity is good though, and the Martial Artist helps. There's plenty here to work with, is what I'm saying, and Mari deserves every bit of it.

1991-92 Impel DC Cosmic Cards #47- Elongated Man

Why do stretching heroes have such a bad rap? Plastic Man was one of the biggest characters during the Golden Age of Comics, and outlived almost all of DC's stable by maintaining a solo series into the 1950s. Elongated Man was one of the first Silver Age heroes, created so that DC could have a Plastic Man of its own, and proved popular enough to push Martian Manhunter out of Detective Comics and take J'Onn's place in the Justice League. In fact, Ralph appeared in far more issues of that team's book than J'Onn, at least until the late '90s. Plus, cast an eye towards Marvel, and you'll see Mr. Fantastic is an institution over there, so what gives?
"Comedy." Someone decided somewhere along the way that stretching heroes should be "funny." All evidence clearly points to the contrary, the take consistently fails, and yet creators insanely stick to the sour formula. Plastic Man was Woozy Winks' straight man. Sue Dibny was Ralph's foil. So why are we stuck with Elongated Man as a nose-wiggling lame-o instead of getting drawn by Bart Sears doing something bitchin'?

1991-92 Impel DC Cosmic Cards #79- Amazo

Today I'm uniting all my blogs through the posting of villain-centric trading cards from the '92 Impel set. Vixen, Zatanna, Vibe nor Steel have their own solo foes, at least in this set. Gypsy could lay claim to Despero or Vandal Savage, but my Martian Manhunter blog already beat her to it. I don't recall which Flash enemies the Elongated Man has fought, and I guess I could do Sonar, but I'm not gonna. I was surprised that Rob Kelly hadn't gotten around to Ocean Master that I could tell, but he covered Black Manta already. That pretty much leaves Amazo or bust, featuring art by Kevin Maguire and Dave Cooper.

2010 Justice League of America #217 Twin Pocket Folder and Notebook Style #3009DC

I grew up watching the Superfriends cartoon, but it was this 1983 George Pérez comic book cover that made me realize that the Justice League of America was an entirely different beast. This remains one of my favorite covers of all time, so when Rob Kelly blogged about a stretchable fabric book cover, I pricked up my ears, even though I had no use for such a thing. Then The Irredeemable Shag posted about a notebook with the art at Firestorm Fan, and I figured I could always use a writing tablet. In fact, my girlfriend was pushing for me to buy a bunch of school supplies, since she's a student and Office Depot junkie, and I'm just getting started with my full time continuing education. I showed her the blog post, and the very next day, she gave me the 2010 Wonder Woman #302 Notebook and Twin Pocket Folder, the JLofA ones, and another besides. Woo-hoo!

The simple twin pocket folder has a consistent color scheme from front to back and on into the interior pockets. The inside wall is white, though, and the actual art stops on the front cover. The back cover has a nice big DC 75th anniversary logo with art by Ed Benes and Jim Lee, plus a smaller version in the bottom left corner.

Now, here's the original cover from '83, and this clearly is not a Detroit era job, with Superman hogging up so much of the space. Unusually, our girl Zatanna manages a prominent center position, slightly overshadowed by Wonder Woman, but the white of her costume really draws your eye. In fact, whenever I think of this cover, it's Zatanna, Superman and Wonder Woman I most easily recall, in that order. Typically, finding more of our guys takes some scanning around. Unfortunately, that only amounts to the men Elongated and Aquatic, and both suffer the indignity of having their legs chopped off thanks to the funky cropping job done on these school supplies. Ralph comes out the best of the two, since he's got the neck stretch thing, making his the biggest head shot around. The only thing fish out of Waterman had going for him was a dramatic sprint, which is totally negated here. If you can't find Batman or Martian Manhunter, it's because they're not there. J'Onn J'Onzz was a year out from returning top Earth, while the Dark Knight had quit the group with Green Arrow/Green Lantern flair to form the Outsiders.
I like to treat Firestorm as an associate of the team, and he looks nice there at the lower left, but I think he deserved Red Tornado's spot. Then again, Red Tornado never deserves a spot, so Metamorpho would be an improvement. Come to think of it, notice the absence of the Flash and Green Lantern? I didn't, which is a testament to the grandeur George Pérez lends and the undervalued quality of later Satellite Era additions!

Moving on to the notebook, you can see that judicious photoshopping was applied to the original cover price and UPC code, which I think turned out okay. The art dimensions on the folder and notebook worked out so that they're nearly identical, which puts aside the disparities in art reproduction found on other covers in this line.

Innovative Designs, LLC puts these out under the DC Comics Originals branding. The notebook itself is great, with sturdy but flexible rubber binding that won't warp like my old aluminum ones did back in grade school. The covers are cardboard, and a tad then, but a quality glossy stock. The inside covers are black, with eighty wide ruled lined pages in between. I have to say again that I'm not only very happy to have such swell looking supplies, but that they offer the rare inclusion of non-headliner Motor City Leaguers, especially Zatanna!

If you have ever seen any deep-water documentary or film, then you know that pressure tends to get a wee bit hairy in that bottomless depth. Now imagine what kind of muscles one would need to have to live down there! Aquaman is used to like ten million pounds of force per square inch of his body! Now that is some physical endurance training if you ask me. The Aquaman revolution begins today with this three and a half inch high by two and a half inch wide magnet! Sorry "Aquaman Week" still hasn't started, and likely won't until Thursday, pushing aside BaTuesday and Zatannaday in its wake. Production on all my blogs is slowing to a crawl this week, I'm afraid.
Not much news has been coming out of the 2010 Chicago Comics & Entertainment Expo, as all the big announcement will likely wait until San Diego. The creators of "Brightest Day" responded to fans who jokingly asked about changes to characters including whether there'd be an explanation for why the Martian Manhunter now has pants (Tomasi teased an upcoming "Ralph Loren tie-in" issue as a joke,) and I believe the only response to an Aquaman query was that he's always had nice hair (which isn't true at all, thinking on the "golden mullet" made infamous by a G4 gaming award. Something more concrete to look forward to? "Vixen will be coming back in a very specific arc" of "Justice League," Robinson said.
Speaking of the Lady Fox, Vixen will receive the "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" treatment in the episode "Gorillas in our Midst!" She's getting a retro redesign that makes her look like a '70s Legionnaire, and will be voiced by Cree Summer, a.k.a. Foxxy Love in Drawn Together. It airs Friday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. on the Cartoon Network, and CBR provides a video preview...

Justice League Animated Style Steel Custom Figure

I really liked Victor Kraven's custom Commander Steel, but I think maybe he should have swapped base figures between Hanks Sr. and Jr. HHIII never looked so thuggish as the Indestructible Man of WWII, so he seems a bit off here.
